Neo Geo CD with graphical issues

Le manque d’infos rend ce système assez dur à analyser, mais on essaye quand même de relever le défi.

Voici les symptômes :

• Problème d’affichage

• Quadrillage, image pixelisée, mais un semblant de vie

The lack of information makes this system quite difficult to analyze, but we’re still trying to take on the challenge.

Here are the symptoms:

• Display issue

• Grid pattern, pixelated image, but a hint of life

Ouverture de la console.

L’œil est tout de suite attiré par quelque chose de pas glop.

Deux pattes semblent pourries.

Il s’agit de la SRAM 128Kb, utilisée pour stocker le fix layer — ça fait sens avec ce que j’ai à l’écran.

The eye is immediately drawn to something not good.

Two pins look corroded.

It’s the 128Kb SRAM used to store the fix layer — which makes sense given what I see on screen.

Nettoyage de printemps.

On dessoude à l’air chaud.

On nettoie à la tresse et au flux, j’utilise ma petite meuleuse pour dégager l’oxydation.

Sur les pins, j’utilise un X-Acto pour gratter, car un des pins de la puce me semble fragile.

Spring cleaning.

Desoldering with hot air.

Cleaning with solder wick and flux, and I use my small grinder to remove the oxidation.

On the pins, I use an X-Acto knife to scrape, because one of the chip’s pins looks fragile.

Effectivement, une piste a pris cher.

Je meule la trace pour laisser apparaître le cuivre, j’étame au plomb, et je pose mon fil pour refaire la piste.

Comme dit plus haut, un pin a l’air faiblard — effectivement, il est coupé à 70 % à la base, entre le pin et le chip.

Indeed, one trace took a hit.

I grind the trace to expose the copper, tin it with lead solder, and lay down a wire to rebuild the trace.

As mentioned earlier, one pin looks weak — and sure enough, it’s about 70% severed at the base, between the pin and the chip.
